Platinum is often referred to as "one of the nobel metals".  It is ductile, malleable and with its specific gravity of 21.45, it holds a top position on the density chart.  With these noble characteristics in mind, platinum can even resist strong chemical agents such as nitric and hydrochloric acids, and due to both its unusual character for use in industry and its scarcity, the cost of platinum exceeds the cost of gold twofold.

The story of platinum is truly fascinating!  Platinum occasionally will form in rocks known as ultramafics which, upon weathering, release  their platinum into an environment known as placer deposits. This occurs over a period of time and longer ago than we might ever imagine.  Many people worldwide interested in mineralogy do not know of or have ever seen the natural platinum specimens produced but in a few alluvial deposits around the world.

The platinum forms crystals consisting of cubes and octahedrons with variations that defy the observer to pick two that are alike.  When you look in awe wondering what other mystery nature could possibly produce, you see a few rare platinum crystals coated in layers of gold.
